ABCDE FLASH

abcde Flash (she/her) is a Basel-based sexploratory, conceptual artist whose work focuses on challenging her own mental and physical boundaries and blockades. She addresses and defies her own limitations through conscious and reflective play with partners, and she uses various media as a way to both document and give shape to these intimate encounters. Whether through film, still images, or text, abcde Flash candidly shares her processes of navigating different sexual curiosities with equal parts vulnerability, authenticity, and humour. 

A graduate of the University of Amsterdam, she obtained a MSc in Gender and Sexuality studies following the completion of her thesis on the impact that heteronormativity and the coital imperative have on perceptions of what constitutes as sex, and the influence that these perceptions have on safe sex practices.

Walking A Fine Line is the celebration of one person's sexploratory journey. abcde flash, the film's creator and protagonist, turned to a sex worker less than a year ago with the wish to be guided towards new thrills, challenges and boundaries with her curiosity leading the way. The maze-like tattoo roping around the side of her body is a reflection of the journey she has been on and is still on – an obscure but playful line with no clear beginning or end, a line that sneaks its way throughout the film in different forms and moods. The film is not just the milestone of one woman's sexual journey but also the result of it.

"'A truly bold, and exceptionally brave film is not always a film that engages us in a physical altercation of the visual kind. And despite being a film that gravitates almost exclusively around a human body, the body of the filmmaker on top, the powerhouse of blood, muscle, bone and nerves that serve as the vessel for her artistic intellect, GRACE. is just this rare breed of film. Sexual interactions - not even between bodies but performed on a body by disembodied hands - dominate the visual realm. Among semi-clinical props, the director is probed, needled, pinched and seen at her most vulnerable, protected only by socks and what transgresses the corporeal. The practices escalate increasingly in nature, we feel challenged, at times overstimulated. Alternating between curiosity and the little shudders that make you question the airs of being truly liberated. Something we all love to exude. Nonetheless, there is humor and a playfulness that accompanies the film's most graphic moments. The sound design even adds some little jokes, irritations unafraid of being deemed inappropriate, tacky or in poor taste. It challenges us to regard the forceful proceedings and products of the human body up close. Bloody encounters of the body with levity. It encourages us to explore what lies beyond the vessel. Joy, pleasure, the infectious laughter of abcde Flash. The laughter only a person who feels at least a certain degree of contentment, of reconciliation with oneself, the body assigned no questions asked, its basic functions can heartily emit. It is easy to consider the way a person moves, carries their body, employs it in interactions with others gracefully; the true grace explored in abcde Flash's film however is a different one. The emotional, even intellectual one. The one that precedes the movements, sex, its visualization on the screen. The tireless and painful work we all face; alone, in our dark rooms, the gloomy corners of our minds, eternally battling external conceptions about our bodies, our littlest imperfections, the way we function in our least pretty moments. In short: What binds our fleetings spirits. And by opening up this conversation with ourselves, GRACE. became the most inspiring film we have seen in a long time. The one amidst a wealth of wonderful competitors we will perhaps never forget.”

The menstrual cycle has four phases, and abcde Flash has mastered them all. She’s learned to recognise each phase by their needs, weaknesses, and strengths.
From the oh-so-draining ovulation (a period of rest), to the absolute mind-fuckery of the luteal phase (social interactions can wait), she arrives at the follicular and menstruation phases, where creativity easily flows (and anything goes!).
Grace. is an ode to abcde Flash’s understanding of her cycle and herself. By accepting each phase for what it is, she’s transformed this never-ending experience of highs and lows into a most reliable routine: a cycle that, like clockwork, she knows she can count on.

The Elephant in the Room

abcde Flash attended a Drag King workshop, led by Marilyn Nova White, where she created her Drag King persona. In Drag King culture, this relationship metaphorically made Marilyn her father. On another occasion, abcde, Tallboy, and others with vulvas, collaborated on a film project. A startling revelation emerged: Tallboy's conception coincided with the shoot day. This put a whole new spin on the 'Who's Your Daddy?' trope. This film challenges conventional notions of family relationships in the popular porn genre of fauxcest by exploring it through the subversive lens of a fauxcest, pregnant, Drag King porn.

Denn im Hotelzimmer ist das Spiel ein improvisiertes und das Beobachtetwerden bei solch schlüpfriger Performance trotz exhibitionistischer Neigungen für alle neu. Im Atelier wiederum kann man nicht so recht wissen, für wen das Spionieren und Spannen neu, für wen es lang gehegte Phantasie oder gar schon ein routiniertes Vergnügen ist. Hier sind alle eingeladen, sich am erlaubten Spannen zu erfreuen und andere Spannende beim Spannen zu bespannen. Eine feine Gelegenheit, sich über das Gute und das Schlechte, das Berührende und Erregende und das Unheimliche des heimlichen Beobachtens ausgestellter Intimität auszutauschen.
